"Oceans & ROcks X"

2007, Handmade paper of dyed Kozo fiber, colored pencil, 10x40

Artist Statement: "My works are concerned with a moment paused, with contemplation, singularity, and silence. The interplay of color, surface, and composition continuously attracts my interest, and challenges me to depict place, time, and mood. I’m deeply influenced by my surroundings. The colors, textures, and light constantly seduce me. Over time, the qualities of a place build up in my mind and become the essence of the place. The essence becomes the touchstone for a series. The material itself influences me: the qualities of pulp, the colors of dyes, and the sound of the water dripping. The physicality of papermaking suits me. When I make a piece, I’m pouring color. It resembles a dance of coordinated movements with a fluid substance, in a set framework, with chance and time factored in.” --Gayle Fitzpatrick.

"Coreopsis"
Mixed media on canvas, 32” x 30”

Artist Statement: "My desire to discover a way to use my art to express the connection to the earth that I feel whenever I spend time in nature inspired this painting series. My use of actual plants achieves such a connection directly. I apply plants to the canvas, then let their shapes, textures, and rhythms inspire the marks and colors I employ while painting. Working intuitively, I build the paintings in layers. Often I use a black-and-white sketch that I have done en plein air for the initial composition and first layer of the painting. For the second layer, I respond to the rhythms and colors of the work to decide which aspects will remain to merge with aspects of the new layer. Although this is only a small example of connecting with nature, it expresses my conviction that all things are connected and the earth must be honored and treated well so that future generations will survive and flourish on this planet.” --June Kellogg
