Fine Art Photographer

"Landscape#3"
Scanned negatives, unframed, archival digital prints.

Artist Statement: "My interest in photography began in my teens, when I used the family cameras to capture what I saw. When I attended the Maine Photographic Workshops in the late 1980's, my interest became more serious, after I had purchased two Banner plastic cameras from the Workshop store and fell in love with the resulting images. Although I used “ normal” cameras as well, I became increasingly fond of those cheap toy cameras, which by now had shoestrings used for their neck straps. My eye was, and still is, drawn to a vast array of subject matter: landscapes, urban scenes, musicians, still life, people. Using Holgas, Polaroid SX-70's, an Olympus 35 mm system, and a Mamiya 645 1000S, I felt the plastic camera gave him his most personal interpretation of the world. Today, I continue photographing a variety of subjects, and have added a Canon DSLR system and a Lensbaby. My self-published book, “Simple: Plastic Camera Photographs,” on Blurb.com, won an honorable mention in the 2008 photographybooknow.com competition. My experience also includes 15 years of black-and-white printing, which I have exchanged for the digital world's workflow, scanning in film, and printing my work with a large-format Epson printer ( although I do get an occasional desire to smell those chemicals). ” --Dennis Stein

Susan Weinz, Belfast ME/Philadelphia (web)
Book Artist & Printmaker

"X Book (2 - X foliation)"
Screen printed book. Page size: 12” x 12”; open 24” x 12”.

Artist Statement: "“As an artist I am drawn to color, clean design, geometric pattern, letter forms, and unusual color combinations, although black and white at times suits me too. White space is important; I am a firm believer that what is not present is as important as that which is, and considering our predisposition to fill up spaces, empty is okay. “ Susan Weinz has been making artist’s books since 2003. With visuals based on old wood type, recent work includes computer-generated text as image in book form and as broadsides, both letterpress and screen printed.” --Susan Weinz.
