"Belongings"
Oil on canvas, 30x36
Bio: "I have been making art for over twenty five years. My art can be viewed in numerous galleries here in Maine and I have shown my art in a variety states within the U.S. such as Alaska, Michigan, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine. My work experience within the art field is varied from commission art work to teaching art in both public and private schools. I have my M.F.A. in fine arts with a concentration in oil painting from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Over the years most of my art has been representational paintings that incorporate small stories that have affected my life. I often juxtapose familiar man made objects into a natural environment to provoke the viewer to think differently about what they see around them. I also work with representational images to evoke an illusion of reality. In many of my paintings I try to create balance within the composition by adding objects that have primary colors: For example in the painting called ‘Next Year’ the red and yellow fall leaves float down across the big blue sky that sits above a grand barren mountainous landscape. In another painting called ‘Belongings’ the red coat and yellowed wooden clock hang across from each other in the white wooded forest. Balance and contrast are universal aspects in all our lives. We have to balance the past with the future, materialism with nature and community with the individual. I’m constantly looking for ways to create art that addresses these universal ideas.” --Rose Mahanor

Sculptor
"Journeys Reliquary"
2007, 63hx32x18. The wood I use is native New England wood. Some of these pieces are meant to appear fragile or sometimes ephemeral, but they are sturdily constructed with healthy wood.
Artist Statement: "I am predominantly a wood carver and have been for most of my sculpture career. I have always included narrative in my sculpture, often including architectural references. Ladders and bridges are among the most fundamental architectural forms, suggesting movement through space and endless possibilities. These are sculptures about journeys taken as we grow and change. Thus the ladder and bridge are animated and have a launching place from which another journey can begin. The boat, the bridge, and the extended ladder become part of the life voyage and open up the imagination to the many possibilities ahead.
Bridge to a New Me began after my mother’s death. I had a startling discovery when I realized how much I had molded myself to her expectations. In my effort to decide who I really wanted to be I was constantly frustrated by the gap between my intellectual understanding of what changes I wished to make and the actual ability to make those changes. The challenges remain and the bridges are part of the journey.” --Lin Lisberger

Sculptor & painter
"Voyager" | 2009 | $15,000
24 carat gold, wood and metal
Artist Statement: "In my work I would like to convey the sense of the voyage of ideals, the arrival of a dreamworld. To hover between the real and the spiritual world. To call up ‘stories’ from our collective past, still points around which our private memories revolve.” --James Strickland

Linda M. Norton, Camden (web)
Painter (Watercolor & Acrylic)
"Tarped"
32 x 25, Watercolor
Artist Statement: "I am primarily a self taught artist. I learn through experimentation and my errors and corrections. Art is a continuing lesson, a challenge to the eye, mind and hand to control your chosen medium. Watercolors, my preferred medium, help me to depict the moods and elements of the sea. I want the viewer to become a friend and partner in my voyage, to feel the fog, hear the bell buoys, follow the lighthouses and know the tilt of the deck as we sail the seas together.” --Linda Norton
