Artist Statement: "In my work I would like to convey the sense of the voyage of ideals, the arrival of a dreamworld. To hover between the real and the spiritual world. To call up ‘stories’ from our collective past, still points around which our private memories revolve.” --James Strickland

"Rose Blood" 2009, oil on two panels, 10x18
Artist Statement: "Painting is record-keeping. My aim is that each piece evokes a quiet moment in time. My paintings are an exploration of color, line and composition informed by impressions of place and aspects of nature. The visual structure for my work has led me to build my paintings in layers, much as a printmaker would combine multiple plates to create an image. With a meditative commitment to draw with paint, I study elements of nature, both from my surrounding environment and from the microscopic world. These I combine with intuitive mark making and invented iconography. Additionally, the seduction of color and paint itself play an important role in the process of making my work. The juxtaposition of these elements, along with imagery both real and unreal, is what I strive to mesh into a total visual experience. Each element contributes to the effect of the whole, while never losing its own identity in the piece.” --Ingrid Ellison
