Artist Statement: "My painting involves an intuitive process that is free of specific subject matter. From 1985 to 2000 my focus shifted back and forth between allover fields and forms within fields. In 2000 I began the geometrical formatting of my fields. This was simply the result of liking the look of one painting when it came in close proximity to another painting. I started by adding one painting to another on the same canvas. This process evolved into varieties of combinations, both vertical and horizontal. I am currently at a point where large vertical sections are suggested by the spontaneously occurring layers in horizontal paintings. I admit that the horizontal layers evoke aspects of landscape. I am fascinated by the landscape of Maine and the Western US: mountains, oceans, canyons, rock walls, geological layers, rock formations, desert, cloud formations, mud flats, blueberry barrens. I am also interested in jazz, many forms of world music, rhythm, color, mark making, Asmat and other tribal art, and abstract art in general. All these elements find their way into my work. Landscape painting per se is usually not very compelling for me. Van Gogh is an exception, but more for his mark making than his subject matter." --Joseph Haroutunian

Artist Statement: "Having lived on Penobscot Bay for 10 years now, I have distilled images in my mind of the land forms and water I see daily. The light changes minute to minute, the islands become icons, dark blocks as foil to the changing colors of light on the water and in the sky. I aim to portray the strength of the images, the drama of the color, the simplicity of the forms, the dark against the light and the interactions of each with each. --Carolyn Caldwell

Since 2008, Maine Arts Scene online magazine has been promoting Maine artists and arts organizations in new and enterprising ways. We quietly revolutionized the local magazine world by offering a truly democratic voice to Maine artists and arts organizations throughout the state. For a small fee, individual artists and arts organizations can submit their press releases to present their work and promote their events on our popular site and social networks. As we reached the 10,000 visits per month milestone in 2009, we decided to push the online magazine boundaries one step further by launching the first statewide juried multi-disciplinary virtual online showcase. We created a unique virtual experience that resembles an actual gallery space, with various rooms to navigate and art work displayed to scale. In 2012, Maine Art Scene is going one step further.  Maine artists and private collectors of Maine art will soon be able to create online stores and sell their work. Arts organizations including galleries, museums, and non-profits will also be able to set up online gifts shops,  box offices and donation pages.
