"Untitled" | Image Printed to 11"x14" on 16"x20" Paper

Artist Statement: "My work has always revolved around the ideas of transience and vulnerability within the context of autobiography. The selected image in black and white silver halide is part of a body of work that began in 2006, which I continue to grow and explore today. The images document a journey of internal and external spaces, dreams from nights past or those yet to be had. Dreaming and wakefulness, like transience and vulnerability, reflect the once strong tree whose bark is now sloughing, like skin from bones, among wood and earth. Surrounded by the natural landscape, each work is a personal encounter, somewhere between dream matter and spiritual entity." --Deanna Witman

"Her Dark Secrets" | Black & White Archival Pigment Print | Images are Printed to Order with a 10"x13" Minimum

Artist Statement: "I create images that reflect the many facets of the human condition. Some are light-hearted, some are steeped in symbolism, some are dark and evocative, some are simply beautiful. Read too much into them and you're working too hard. Let down your guard and just go to where your instincts naturally take you. It's OK. Life is not always pretty, but it certainly is rich. You'll be fine. I've been creating photographic works of art regularly since 1994. Pedigree is overrated. You can find my work year-round at Galerie Dufour in Belfast, and in group exhibitions at various galleries primarily in the North Eastern U.S." --Charles Laurier Dufour

"Her Dark Secrets" by Charles Dufour is ancient and modern and concrete and over-worldly and disconcerting and comforting. In other words, I like it quite a bit.

Maine Artists Quotes

"My aim is to escape from the medium with which I work; to leave no residue of technical mannerisms to stand between my expression and the observer."

Maine-Magazine

Since 2008, Maine Arts Scene online magazine has been promoting Maine artists and arts organizations in new and enterprising ways. We quietly revolutionized the local magazine world by offering a truly democratic voice to Maine artists and arts organizations throughout the state. For a small fee, individual artists and arts organizations can submit their press releases to present their work and promote their events on our popular site and social networks. As we reached the 10,000 visits per month milestone in 2009, we decided to push the online magazine boundaries one step further by launching the first statewide juried multi-disciplinary virtual online showcase. We created a unique virtual experience that resembles an actual gallery space, with various rooms to navigate and art work displayed to scale. In 2012, Maine Art Scene is going one step further.  Maine artists and private collectors of Maine art will soon be able to create online stores and sell their work. Arts organizations including galleries, museums, and non-profits will also be able to set up online gifts shops,  box offices and donation pages.
